Default Working for the tax man

I wonder what qualifications you need to get a job at HMRC, It appears being able to work un-supervised, be a quick learner and displaying common sense, are not high on their list of requirements.

They send out un-encrypted information which was not requested on disc, drop them in a jiffy bag and whack on a stamp. I turns out this isn't the first time disc's have been lost by HMRC either, so they clearly don't learn from their mistakes. Where do they get these people?

I'm sure listening to brown and co on TV has made 25million people feel a whole lot better.

Hope thats not me you are taking about as i work for HMRC !

Dont worry i am not offended and no need for mods to step in.

I dont blame you for your comments as those of us who do have common sense and work in the department cannot understand it either.

I work in Telford and we have to wear id passes to get in car parks and buildings and lock our computers whenever we leave our desks, even for a few minutes. Even though HMRC does have sensitive details I would not be able to access or download anything that does not relate directly to my job and even if i could there is an anti fraud team monitoring what we access - dismissal the penalty for unauthorised access !

Security is in place therefore, lots of it, so looks like somebody has not followed the laid down guidance in this case.

I have no inside knowledge of what has happened no doubt it will be reported in the press before long for all to see.

Today all staff have been denied access to download anything to disc, floppy disc or memory stick as a result of recent developments and this will cause problems for those of us who are compliant with the regs.

Today i had to do a presentation in another buildng and tried to copy the slides from my computer to memory stick only to find access denied. I had to print out the slides and use as handouts !

HMRC currently has around 80,000 staff - please dont tar us all with the same brush.

Your comments are very Note worthy and no disrespect was meant to any Individuals.
The point I was trying to make is, It should not be able to happen, this is the third "Loss" of sensitive information, and someone should be keeping a tighter reign on it.
The people in charge are always ultimately responsible and it is their job to sort it out.
Nobody wanted to go to bank Payments etc, many OAP's loved going to the PO and being able to take their books there and have a Chat.
Rant Over, and hope your work atmosphere turns to normal soon for you.

Well, they've certainly made it the most sought after double cd on the run up to Christmas!!!

Seriously though, it doesn't surprise me, they've managed to lose quite a few important and confidential documents I've sent to various departments.

These days I send everything registred post and ask for written conformation of reciept.

I don't know what all the fuss is about - sooner or later the discs are bound to turn up on ebay and then they can buy them back.
problem solved
