Fuel pump problem ??
Hi I have a 54 plate mg zt. Last few times broke down.car stopping, losing power then starts again randomly. Chugging, then bursts into life. Got relayed to local garage.
Still looking at car. Is it likely to be the fuel pump, how easy a job is it and where is it located. Any help appreciated |

Fuel filter is the likely culprit, they often come apart slightly causing the symptoms you have. Lift the rear seat cushion, near side is a cover, remove this and you'll see the filter. It may need twisting together properly. There is a plastic clip available to prevent it happening again. If you search for ffs, Fuel filter separation there's plenty of threads, pictures etc

Will speak to the garage tomorrow and see what they have found. Love this car hopefully it's a simple fix. |

Hi looks like it's the camshaft sensor that's gone.
Think the fuel filter had also come apart too. Will update if any further issues. |

It won't be the camshaft sensor Ruth. That's needed only for starting so an engine that is already running will continue to do so.
As already advised, fuel filter separation is the most likely diagnosis. Don't let your garage charge you for a camshaft sensor which isn't needed! Simon

Hi sorry, the car was starting previously but its not now.
Everything has been stripped, pump and filter, and it's the camshaft sensor. Can anyone advise where I can get one.? The garage have ordered 2 but neither fitted. Thankyou |

Can you confirm which engine your car has?

1.8 engine
Quote:
Thanks for your reply. I had camshaft sensor failure last August. They typically fail when it is attempted to re-start a very hot engine (outside temperature approx. 30˚C). If your engine is not starting from cold in mild temperatures (about 22˚C) then I'd advise caution because the sensor may not be the culprit. Has your garage read a fault code which confirms camshaft sensor failure? If not, just to be sure before you spend money, ask them to put the sensor in a domestic freezer for half an hour as that will restore normal operation. This is something that club members have found to work so your garage is unlikely to be aware of it. If these tests confirm the diagnosis then you need: 1 x NSC 000310 sensor 1 x YSB 002390 "link" lead Your original factory-fitted sensor has the "link" lead built-in but now the two parts have to be bought separately. These are available from Rimmer Bros. as vitesse has posted but also from DMGRS, a supplier which has particularly close links with the club. Here is their website and if you need to fill in the "option" box, select Sensor and K series link lead YSB 002390. Good luck and let us know how it goes! Simon

Not you Simon - I'm asking the OP to confirm the engine type.
If we assume it is the 1.8, then if you suspect the cam sensor just unplug it and try and start the engine. It's been a few years since we had a 1.8, but if I remember correctly the engine will run with the cam sensor unplugged. It may run 180 degrees out, but it uses a wasted spark so it will fire up. |
