Yeah... maybe. Don't think it's going to be that simple for you. Always bearing in mind I don't know what I'm talking about - merely reporting my experience as it happens - I think any of these units is going to be problematic, if only because they're not designed for our cars.

Sad thing is, there's a lot I like about it

Refund received. End of a pretty stressful saga.

It seems likely to me that the particular Erisin model I chose (fairly randomly), the ES2746B, had been rushed to market without sufficient testing, as many of its functions simply didn't work - eg the sleep function, which should have allowed it to stay on standby for a variable time on switching the ignition off.

Also it was incapable of updating etc.

I don't know whether I'll bother trying a different unit - maybe I'll just accept that this is an 18-year-old car, and stick with my Sony stereo, which is pretty good.

Good luck to anybody else taking this project on. My advice would be to find somebody here who has done it already, and choose a model which has proved itself!

The one both of us Sjonnie and me have fitted and that works fine:
Erisin ES8788B.

If you have the stomach for it I would suggest you get the ES8788B and give Erisin another chance. There are at least two people on this forum who have this unit fitted and working properly. And I am sure Arnoud will help if needed. And so am I.

The unit is worth the effort, trust me on that.

I have it in my MK2 for several months now and have had no issues with it what so ever. The only thing I would like to see as an improvement for this device is support for multiple BT devices simultaneously. Unfortunately the chances of getting a firmware upgrade are less than none

(I should really visit the ICE section more often )

Thanks Jan, that’s very good of you

It’s a bit out of my price range, but maybe…
Could you just reassure me on a couple of points please?

1. When you switch it on from a cold boot, does it resume where you left off, eg if you were listening to the radio, does it come back on when it powers up, and with the same station?
2. Does the RDS work properly without having to be manually configured? On the one I had, I had to switch the AF (alternate frequency) function on every time

3. Does the “sleep” function work OK? So that you can select a time interval for the unit to stay powered up when you switch the ignition off, avoiding a cold boot every time you stop the car for a minute…

Not sure if Erisin will want to do business with me again anyway – I was patient for a long time, I think, but eventually got a bit shirty with them when they kept suggesting things which didn’t work, getting me to pay postage costs for returning a faulty unit etc…

Uhm... yes, I think. I do not use the radio app very often. Dutch radio is more blah blah than music and the stations that do play music play music I don't like I sometimes use the music player app and that one starts playing the song it ended with. It does however start at the beginning of the song.

I do not know since I don't use the radio often. Maybe Arnoud can be of assistance here.

My unit switches on when I turn on ignition. It turns of when I remove the key. Because the unit is connected to permanent life I do not have could boots. The unit starts within 3 to 4 seconds.

I am sure they will. They wouldn't even remember I gather. And after all... you'll have your own specialized support crew right here. So as long as the unit is not DOA you won't need them

Good luck with your decision process!

Heh – same here. But I’m very old, so like some of the blah blah

Ah right. So… doesn't it run your battery down?

Ha ha, maybe. They did seem very disorganised.
Still rather more than I want to spend though, so I’ll have to think long and hard…

Thanks (still no Thanks button here)

The unit does not drain my battery. I must admit that the 75 does not get to rest more than three days in a row because it's my daily car.

Good luck with your decision making

Well, thanks for the help, guys - but after weeks of frustration just trying to get Erisin to send me a cable for the Rover, I opened a dispute with PayPal to get a refund. I'm pleased to say I have this now, and would sooner sauté my balls in petrol than do business with Erisin again.

Quite fortuitous, though, as it happens, because I finally decided to abandon my 12-year full-time occupation of throwing money at the Rover; it's being picked up tomorrow by an enthusiast, and that will be that.

As Vinnie Jones said in Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels - it's been emotional.
