Exclamation So..... THIS happened....

So..... THIS happened.... (re-arrange letters as required!)

On my way to the Aberdare meet yesterday morning I got a mile up the road when Maurice started to sound rough, a few seconds later the "check engine" warning showed up on the display, then disappeared. About 5 seconds later the battery charge light appeared and then the power steering was... well... no longer power assisted!

Aha! I thought - Aux/Fan/Serpentine belt has snapped....

I turned around at the next roundabout and made my way the few miles back home.

Thinking to myself "I'll get a head-start on the job and pull the broken remains out" I poppoed the bonnet and, sure enough, the belt was slack with no tension.

Grabbing the belt and pulling I then hear a noticeable metallic 'thunk' from near the bottom of the engine "What the.. etc" I thought.

Looking down I saw this:-

And here's a close-up I've adjusted the exposure/contrast on for a better view:-

The belt is fine.

Somehow the Crankshaft pulley bolt has unwound and, with my tug of the belt has come out completely bringing with it the crankshaft pulley.

No damage, though I still don't know why/how it's become loose. The last time it was off is nearly 3 years ago when I did the belts, it spins clockwise and I always use 243 when re-assembling.

However, it's a good job this didn't happen on the M50 the other night at 69.9mph...!

Never seen that before. Lucky indeed.
Will be interested to know how/why it happened.

Very lucky, but even more so, you seem to know what you are looking at and what to do about it, well done. Most garages would already have diagnosed the need for a new engine.

Not seen that before!! They are usually a mare to remove, I’d be checking the internal threads carefully before refitting.

I've seen it on a friend's Picasso and you could still see the threadlocking compound on the bolt (recovered from the roadside !). The garage had the idea that the crank thread had oil on it when the bolt was inserted, so that the locking compound could not lock onto the steel.

Are you sure no damage has occurred ? - the Check Engine Light would have me concerned that the Timing was out Causing Misfires - have you checked for Fault Codes ? ........ if the V6 is similar to the k1.8 (Interference Design) - "Potential" Valve and or Piston damage would be something i'd not rule out.

I'm 99% sure, as it ran faultlessly for the 4 miles or so back home after the battery light came on.

I currently don't have my windows laptop here to fire up TOAF to pull the codes - I'm picking it up from my fathers on Friday so will be checking next weekend when I'm home and actually have time to sort it out (rescued the pulley and bolt and both seem fine, also).

May well be a good idea to check the timing belt tension while I'm at it, to be on the safe side.

Finally got around to sorting the pulley today.

After installing a new genuine serpentine belt I fired him up for the first time in 15 days and he sprang straight into life as usual, purring away. Really missed that V6 sound.

I'd forgotten how annoyingly strong the tensioner is... you really need a 2nd person... but after some muffled expletives I managed to get the belt on with minimal knuckle scraping.

The only codes I had stored were low battery voltage and VIS power open. I did the VIS flap about a year ago (usual spline snap); the low voltage is obvious.

One short test-drive later and I realised after looking in the mirror I had unknowingly developed my biggest grin for at least fortnight.
