Momentary loss of power under acceleration
A couple of issues have appeared over the last couple of days.
Firstly under acceleration I've been getting a momentary stutter or hiccup then its its fine again. This has happened three times since yesterday. Secondly moving slowly in queuing traffic on the way home tonight, the engine struggled to maintain revs when I took my foot off the accelerator. I thought it was going to cut out but a push on the accelerator and it was fine again. Car is a 1.8T. Plugs are gapped at approx. 0.7mm Any thoughts welcomed. |

Check all the vacuum hoses from the turbo especially those to the solenoid on the side of the air filter box, for starters.

As an update, it took three attempts to get the car started this evening, it fired up then can't maintain the revs and cut out.
I had a quick look at the vacuum hoses, but it looks like I'll have to remove the air box to get a good look where it goes into the turbo. |

Fuel starvation and or ignition.
I would check the pump, filter and plugs. Including the lid coming off the filter housing. The 1.8 is very sensitive to plugs not performing well, and obviously also to fuel starvation.

I'm not sure exactly how the symptoms of "Fuel Filter Separation" exhibit - there is a newer "White Clip" version available as a fix for this if it is the issue. I'm sure there is plenty info on here r.e Fuel Filter Separation and the Diagnosis/Repair procedure have you checked for any Fault Codes ? Paul. |

Thanks for the replies.
I had FFS 3 years ago and had the bizzy lizzy clip fitted then. I checked all the plugs this morning and visually all looked ok and were dry. I had one spare new coil pack which I put on (when I bought it I thought they came as a pair!). The old coil packs are the ones that were on when I bought the car so have no idea how long they've been on and don't know if they are genuine. I will get one more coil pack as a precaution so I have a matching pair. I now have one beru (new) and one denso (old). It started ok this morning but haven't been out in it yet. I could hear the pump priming the system. I don't have any kit to check for fault codes, but if you can recommend one I'll get it. |

Failing crankshaft sensor ? Next time if she fails to start keep an eye on the rev counter- if it does not flicker it points to the crank sensor.
