diesel starter motor
Evening all I have a problem with a diesel starter motor, the problem first occurred about a month ago ,an audible click could be heard when turning the key but no rotation followed .I researched this in the forum and was happy to find that the most common fault was the contacts, and very little else ever went wrong. I replaced the contacts which were quite badly pitted and burnt and until now all has been well until today. The same audible click
occurs but much louder but again no rotation so it seems that the solenoid is throwing the pinion into the flywheel quite briskly but not turning. I have found that if I tap the starter body [not the solenoid] with a blunt instrument the motor will start. From days of old this suggests to me a bad spot on the comm ,Is this a known fault ,and how difficult is the remedy. I would be most grateful for your replies. |

Or just do a quick change and stick in a replacement. Plenty of traders on here to help with a replacement.

Well Sir you are on here often enough ,that I am surprised that you don't know the answer to that. Anyway renewing the brushes looks rather complicated ,so I have replaced the starter motor. Many thanks to everyone for their help.

Thanks for that, when I dismantled the starter the brushes appeared to be crimped into the windings in a very industrial manner. Without a purpose made means of releasing the crimping without damage and then re-crimping, it looked to be beyond my talents. In addition the commutator was a bit black and had ,I think seen better days. In my application reliability is paramount, hence the new starter. Thankyou for your interest and advice, everything is up and running again.
