Intermittent non-start from cold (diesel auto)
Yes I know I'm hardly the first to post this but as there are so many suggestions on the Forum could some clever chap narrow the priorities down please?
Very rarely fails to start (always from cold, never any problems from hot) - but when it does no clicks are heard, nothing at all - repeated tries then it fires fine. And runs fine. As it has never failed to start when warm, this presumably rules out cam sensor? My trawling of posts tends to suggest starter solenoid, but what do I know? Battery connections are good and tight.

If it was the starter solenoid you WOULD hear a click.
However with the points inside in poor ( burnt ) condition no electricity would go into the starter motor. It's the points that get replaced when repairing the solenoid and not the solenoid core or electrical windings. If you don't hear a click then it's probably a poor ( intermittent ) connection at the 12 volt tag on the solenoid body. |
