Default Why would drive/aux belt move out of line?

Noticed this morning that the drive belt is out of line with the tensioner, see pic, any idea why this would happen?

Thanks

Tim

Okay, belts are off, tensioners seem to be running smoothly with no lateral play.

The AC compressor pulley has a little play, but then the clutch isn't engaged so I'd expect that.

Belts are way past their best but no other clues.

Any more ideas?

Thanks

When I saw the thread title Steve I thought exactly the same, as I have experienced it myself, but our OP has a 1.8, not a stone crusher.

If all the pulleys look in line then try a belt change - if one starts to let go it can get slack on one side and maybe creep off centre?

Hi Tim,

Your 1.8T has only a tensioner, no idler pulley, I understand. Whilst the rotating part of the tensioner may well be running smoothly, your alarming photograph suggests that the applied tension is incorrect, allowing the belt to slip off the pulley.

You could try retensioning it by following the MG Rover instructions then, if possible, starting the engine with the covers off and observe what happens. A failing tensioner will move slightly through its range rather than appearing stationary.
Alternatively just renew it.
