Default Belts

OK it's on a diesel but check your belts closely guys.
This was the belt as found when changing the alternator today.
Just 85k but I suspect original so 15 years old.

HI Ian.
That would be the small belt that runs the A/C compressor, reported about this back in 2014 nearly every diesel car would be the same if original.

Did they check the power steering hose for rubbing on the compressor pulley, a few members have suffered that fate if not get it tied back out of the way cheers Arctic

My brain is a bit frazzled this morning, is the AC belt a 5PK870?

I can always remember the aux belt sizes, but for some reason not the AC belt

I have found the same when changing them at the recommended service interval Ian, so your belts may have been changed before.

Jules has mentioned reducing the torque when setting the tensioner and I have given it a go on the last 3 belts I have replaced.

Will report back when the first one is changed again on whether the old belt is in better condition or not.

Hi Ian. When my friend and I changed our belts,we found that the aircon belt was like that after around 7 years from new. The auxiliary belt was starting the develop cracks in it. The out side of the belts was ok. Not long changed both again and the same again apart from the auxiliary belt which is stowed in my boot for emergency use, the aircon belt was no good. As Jules suggested, we did not put as much torque on the belts this time. See what happens in around 6 years time.

Cheers for that Steve, I had a Gates 5PK2030 in stock, and because this was a time critical job, I picked up a Continental ContiTech 5PK875 at ECP for a tenner including the VAT.

There were a couple of reasons for failure, this car had a new crank pulley fitted two weeks ago by the owner of the car's local garage.

It had about 2.4mm of runout

So after I removed the pulley, I found a lump of grit on the end of the crankshaft, I cleaned that off, and refitted the pulley properly.

Second mistake, the belts which were fitted to the car when the original pulley failed, were refitted after the pulley was replaced.

Now as I'd cut off the shredded remains of the old belts, the AC compressor belt tensioner was in it's previously set position.......at the end of it's adjustment.

What had caused the breakdown yesterday was the AC belt running off, and catching the auxiliary belt.

The owner was charged no less than £306 to replace the pulley.......half a job by an incompetent fitter, and charged as if prestige service was being delivered.

I cannot say I'm surprised sadly, this particular outfit has demonstrated their incompetence coupled with staggering greed time after time

Yes, the very same car Steve, I used the services of the RAC to recover it home, not because I really needed too, but because I wanted a paper trail for the owner to use when he confronts the garage.

It's shocking really

Anyway, I'll keep a lookout for the next package arriving
