That's interesting. Are you talking about the black motor wire, which becomes white and was then earthed?
Have you disconnected that wire from earth and spliced it into the red wire to the resistor?
What about the RL-150B aftermarket relay, is that still in circuit?

I'd just like to understand what you've done.

Hi Dave.
I didn't you did maybe Jimmy's mechanic can follow cartoon pictures better unless he is referring to the first photo I put of the original 2 speed control box.

It is nice to know though that we have all combined together helped another owner to get his car more or less working as it should, I would still like to know like Simon & yourself what was done about the large red wire connected to the thin wire, and at the same time does Jimmy or his mechanic know what car the fan came from which he as on his car.

Well done lads I think we can all sleep with a smile on our face tonight, tomorrow I have a bigger problem, removing a very stuck injector, tried this evening with the pry bar, no good so the big guns are coming out tomorrow Slide Hammer

A few years ago Dave someone came up with a bodge for three speed fans where he took the grille off, reached through and pulled out the fan cables then cut and swapped them so that the worn out common brush was done away with and replaced by the high speed brush, the medium speed brush used for the slow speed, and the half worn slow speed used for high speed. You lost medium speed, but it was a quick fix compared to doing a proper job!

Never did it meself mind - I have been running a single speed 214 fan for years now. It was a temporary fix one weekend when I didn't have a spare and it was laying around the garage, and I have never got round to replacing it.

Excellent Steve, you've solved it! In your cartoon you inserted a dotted black line between the black motor wire (which we were told is earthed) and the red wire side of the resistor.

I think that's what Zickleer's mechanic has done. So the motor red and green wires are still supplied with +12v via the aftermarket RL-150B relay but the motor's black wire is now earthed via the resistor and control box relays to achieve the two speeds. Does that make sense Steve and Dave?

So the fan is now wired via the control box as it should be. I would have removed the RL-150B relay and its wiring entirely, connecting the car's original thick brown wire directly to motor red and green. I hope that Zickleer will reply concerning this.

Anyway, it's great news that he's got it working correctly and I'm delighted that we were able to help.

Simon
