One bit of advice applies to all mechanical levers.

Never just yank lever on allowing the ratchet to click up.
Always press the button 1st and release when tight.

This avoids wearing the teeth of the ratchet down.
How often does it wear the teeth down to the point that it becomes an issue.

Oh, it wont, if you don't use it, but for those who make proper use of a handbrake when driving, there can be quite a lot of wear avoided by pushing the button in. Its not a nice noise anyway.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

oh i don't know, I'd bet it'd make no difference at all in terms of it being an issue.

You might better understand, had you driven some of the wrecks I have driven over the years

If there is an easy way to avoid wear and tear, I take it. It takes minimal effort and saves my ears from an horrible noise.

In the past maybe but I can't see it being an issue on modern cars.

I don't really put the handbrake on that way but I know people that do. I don't think it bothers them too much.

Car manufacturers were telling people to pull it up on ratchet after a series of cars rolling away.

My understanding of “correct” handbrake use is to hold down the button when applying the hand brake and then thumb off the button and pull up one more notch - or two if ‘that feels right’.

So I suppose I do a bit of both.

That is a fair compromise

Thanks - have to say that I see this from both standpoints. Whilst I really dislike the action of applying the handbrake without depressing the button - the noise genuinely offends my sense of mechanical sympathy - I also find it difficult to believe that the ratchet teeth suffer significant wear .

I’m sure there is wear - just as the ratchet teeth in an old mechanical clock will wear out over time - the time taken for wear to be significant is considerable.

And the ratchets are far more delicate in a clock and work constantly 24/7.

So whilst I still hate the thought of “ratchet abuse” and don’t do it - I’m not sure a handbrake ratchet suffers much by this heinous abuse.....
