Default Diesel Starting Problems

My CDT seem to have developed an intermittent starting problem. Sometimes it just turns over and wont fire, sometimes it turns over and seems to fire up only for it to immediatelty cut out, and some times it starts OK.

Are starting faults something that a mechanic with an OBDII reader will be able to diagnose or do they usually need a T4 session. Car refuses to start at the moment, I have Autoaid breakdown cover but don't know of anyone locally with a T4.
