Default Chewed up fanbelt mk1 75 cdti

Hi all.
So when I bought this car a couple of weeks ago the fan belt looked fine (new actually) but today I noticed a tapping noise and found that the fan belt looked like it was being stripped from one side. I first thought that a pulley was out of line, but looking towards the back of the engine, something looks really close. Maybe it’s supposed to be there, and I can’t judge as my car is hot. But I’ve added some pics to try and explain.
I’ll be driving 35 miles home tonight, then another 100 miles to a gig tomorrow (somebodies wedding and only my car can fit the gear in) so any quick remedies would be really appreciated!!

Eddie

Hi Eddie.
That belt is striping so it either damaged or is catching on something, the crank pulley could be on it's way out personally i would not drive the car with the belt in that condition.

The last photo shows how close the belt is too the thermostat hosing they are all like that.

Get it looked at asap and changed.

Thanks artic, I was starting to think the engine mount had dropped the engine a fraction.
I’ll see what I can talk my garage into in the morning, but fixed or not, this thing is going to need to limp to York tomorrow…
I’m guessing a crank pulley isn’t the easiest or quickest job to do though?

Crank pulley shouldn't take long to do. Mobile mechanic changed mine in the driveway in less than an hour but make sure you use a Corteco crank pulley as a replacement.

First thing I'd do is change the belt. Worth removing the inner wing liner and checking that nothing is rubbing (I don't bother removing it just to change the belt) but cheap Chinese tat belts can break up without any interference.

My belt did a very similar thing and was caused by a replacement alternator which had too short of a pulley. Definitely worth checking 👍

I was thinking that same thing, as a couple of bits had been swapped on the and the belt was very new.
What’s odd is that the belt was stripping, on the inside. So if pulley or tensioner related, I’d expect to see whatever is at the edge of the pulley to be chewed, instead the edge looked fine and the damage was working it’s way in to the middle (if that makes sense?)
