Default Water ingression into spare wheel well ZTT

I know this topic has been done to death and tracing leaks is a time consuming and laborious process. My current focus is on the ventilation panel located on the offside behind the audio rack just ahead of the tail lights. Does this cover spring off or are there clips? Why would water get into the wheel well via this cover because there is no external access to it apart from a potential leak from the rearmost side window seal and then down onto the vent cover? A believe all other suspects, roof rail mountings, tailgate glass sealing tailgate hinges are not the source because water only accumulates in the spare wheel well and there are no tell tale signs on the headlining, boot area carpet or load cover.
I am trying to understand what this vent cover actually ventilates and what is behind it.
Thanks for reading and help in advance.
