When Mum was in Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool bringing my new sister into the world, Dad took me in 1950 to the ‘Pictures’ as it was then called. We weren’t yet Americanised into ‘Movies’ at that stage.
It was the first time Dad took me anywhere and it was to see a brand new science fiction film called Destination Moon. To my very young eyes it was fabulous and stayed in my mind for many years, well after it came magically true and surfaced into my mind again. Two years ago I was browsing vintage lists and recognised the art work from the posters that were outside the cinema all those years ago. Bought the DVD and there it was! Many happy memories returned from an age of charm and innocence.

Paternal Grandmother took me and my younger sister to see 'Bambi'. It was when my mother was in the nursing home having had our youngest brother, so it must have been Nov. 1948, and I would have been 9 years old...

Unfortunately my father was wheelchair bound and passed away when I was just 13.
I do remember going to my first Bond Movie Goldfinger at the Odeon in Ayr I sat through all three performances changing seat so the attendants wouldn't' spot me. In those days you just paid and walked in even when it was in the middle of a film. Nowadays of course each cinema is emptied after the film. |

Not my father, he never went to the cinema that I can remember, but mother. The very earliest one I can remember was Snow White, and the witch scared the hell out of me and my ice cream went up in the air, landing on the poor guy in front of us. It must have been around 1952 - ish, in the local cinema, which was a converted chapel. The last time I was in that area, like so many - it had become a carpet shop.
She was a bit of a Fred and Ginger fan, so she would take me to many of those films for a bit of company - I would just be bored. The only similar thing I remember my father going to, was when we all went to a panto at City Varieties one Christmas. We then had a coal fire and they had just bought an electric fire for a bit of quick heat, until the fire got going. We also had a little dog. I cannot have been very big, because when we got back from the panto, I remember the dog grabbing hold of me (well my clothes) and dragging me around the living room.

"It's a Mad Mad World" starring Spencer Tracey. Even now I still like to watch it.

The first film (and only I think) my Dad took me to see was The Empire Strikes Back, but the first film I saw at the cinema was Grease, with my Nan and Mum on holiday in Bournemouth in 1978
