What has recently come into force though, is a half points system. If you gathered 6 points or more, whilst driving with an R plate in force, you would lose your licence and have to resit your test. Or you can have you restriction extended beyond the one year.

A good idea that needs extending.

My idea was that a new test had to be passed to move up the grades.

The drivers would have to improve their abilities or indicate to the world by the letter on the plate and help folk to stay away from them if they were sporting a large letter A.

Saves trying to guess the ability of the person driving that car in front of you.-------------------

Unfortunately I have seen the video, facebook users can be cruel. I think (and I hate to say it) confusion, for whatever reason, has added to this incident. From what little I saw, cars travelling in the correct direction were so at speed, the unfortunate driver with the caravan, also appeared to be travelling at a reasonable speed (not speeding), rather than pulled over stopped towards the barrier. I didnt notice how far away from any on ramp it was (and i wasnt replaying it once I realised what it was), but it was in lane 3 ie the so called 'fast lane', so the driver has cut across two lanes into what I can only assume they thought to be their lane 1.

The volume of cars in the correct direction, would have made it difficult for those following to see anything amiss until the last minute, with some cars swerving suddenly at the last second towards the barrier. I am not in a position to make judgement, but it sadly appears to have been some form of confusion rather than eyesight and age. Along with the impatience (and in my opinion, and I am guilty of this more than I like to admit) selfishness, with speed and spacing.

There's been speculated that it was 8A on the M40 where they got on, coming from the west. I had a look on google maps and can see that it could well have started there.

The M40 Watlington On and Off are confusing, very easy to get the wrong one-no I haven't done it but have "observed" when in the area. I hate to think of the state of mind of the driver when they realised what they had done! There are a lot of badly engineered road and Motorway junctions in this country- its the good old British "that's good enough" in play. Chris.S.

And on the cyclist problems I am one and have never found a need to ride of pavements fail to observe ATS or fail to comply with other regs. I have had words with those who do on a few occasions with no effect- I console myself with the knowledge the same people in many cases drive cars and motorbikes and jump ambers, obstruct pavements, play car music at 130plus decibels, throw rubbish out the car/van windows, speed etc etc And how about introducing the French(wash my mouth out)! reg that states you have to give a cyclist a meter and a half when you pass them in a vehicle-one for you Trikey. Yes I'm afraid you are right there snetty..I see it every week in the test station, some instructors putting people in for test who are obviously not ready.
