For the water test with the pulley it needs to be squirted up from underneath the car aiming at the rubber bonding between the two pulleys, temporarily lubricating the, what is now, disintegrating bonding,
Here's where the water goes:

a quick update:

I was wrong about the clutch, it's actually the clutch master cylinder that is leaking. I found a Rover 75 specialist here in the Netherlands and he topped up the fluid and it is okay for now. 9 out of 10 times the car shifts fine, only when parking & reversing does the gear get difficult to put into gear sometimes, but while driving it's fine. So I'll get the clutch master cylinder replaced in the near future.

The crankshaft pulley was replaced just now with a corteco one and it's good again. However there are a few things I noticed:

the rubber on the previous pulley is fine, if u would look at the pulley u would say there is nothing wrong it, however if u bang it on the ground u can hear the middle part of the pulley wobbling

which brings me to my next point, my mechanic got the bolt out quite easily, contrary to what u usually read here on the forums about the bolt being very tight, he got it out in less then 5 minutes by using an impact gun & manual force

the question is, how?

Does tightening manually by feeling & with impact gun rather than using the torque spec cause the pulley to wear out faster? is that possible? Because even now, my mechanic didn't have the tools to tighten the bolt according to the spec that was listed (100 nm + 60 + 60 + 30) he just made the bolt tight with his impact gun & with manual force

I'm asking because the pulley failed at 50.000 km (continental brand) and I just want to avoid this job again and if necessary just find a garage to quickly torque the pulley to spec if it's necessary

would like to hear your guys opinion on this

thanks

In a word no. Corteco is the replacement to fit - they tend to last longer than anything else. Mine is still going fine at 412k miles, must be a lucky one.
