Default Under Bonnet Fuel Pump

Car ran ok this morning.
This after didn't start.
Lifted the bonnet and moved some wires.
After messing with the fuel pump wires it started to hum.
Car started ok no problem.
Question.
Is the pump on it's way out?
OR
Is it just the wire needed moving a bit?

Clean the plug contacts and then if it happens again check you have 12v at the plug, and if you do the pump is buying the farm.

Not unknown for cables to break, but more likely the pump commutator brushes are worn and it needs a tap to get it started.

You wouldn't think the brushes would wear as they run submerged in diesel all the time.---

So it is more lightly to be the contact connection than the pump itself?

Could be as above clean contacts with contact cleaner only, then put a glob of
vaseline into the plug push fully home, also you could add some extra electrical tape tape to the wiring going to the plug to make them more stable, just in case there is an air line crack in of the wires.

Keep an eye on it and if it happens again the pump is on it's way out, only fit a pierburg pump or a good known used one, after market pumps do not last.

I haven't had a UBP apart to determine why they fail Jon - with the ITPs it isn't the brushes but the commutator itself that wears down to the bone.
Common for a failing UBP to come to life with a tap or two, which suggests a poor contact between the commutator and brushes either way.

I’d say it’s the pump that’s on the way out, never seen one last very long if it’s starting to stick.

It happened again last night. Lifted the bonnet tapped the pump and away we went on our way.
Any idea how long I will get away with tapping it to start before it gives up altogether?
Also who or where would be the best place to get a good fuel pump from?

There is no answer as to how long it will last, if it’s failing then get a replacement before you get stranded somewhere.

Rimmer bros have them in stock, beware of cheaper ones on eBay hat don’t last 5 mins.
