No Mike, a repair kit is available for the V6 solenoid for about £15.

Yes, more or less.

It’s best to remove the battery and its box too.

It’s part of the starter motor assembly. Have you got a Haynes manual?

Starter motor solenoid thingy replaced. Car started ok. Hopefully this has resolved the erratic (non)starting.

Question: radiator fan recently has taken to running continuously when car stopped and ignition key removed. Is that a bumper off and replacement resistor type repair?

In the first instance it means that the engine is getting too hot. The reason for that could well fan related. The first thing to do is to test that your slow speed is working by performing the 'demist test'.

All fine yesterday following work on starter motor. Started the car, went for a drive. This morning jumped into the car with a happy heart. Ignition on everything ok. Turn the key . . . nothing . . . not a peep . . . no turn over . . . nothing . . . exactly where I was before the work. Consequently I'm assuming it's a dodgy immobiliser or something equally hard to identify. Beginning to feel I've had enough. The car has great sentimental value to me, for family reasons, and in many respects it's the best car I've owned. However . . .

You musn’t assume anything David. Instead measure things, specifically whether there is a voltage on the connection to the starter motor solenoid when an assistant turns the ignition key to ‘start’.

Did you buy the repair kit specifically for the KV6 with automatic transmission? Did you renew the plunger as well as the contacts? From whom did you buy it?

Part purchased: http://www.startermotorkits.com/list...id-repair-kit/

The frustrating element is that yesterday at 6:00 p.m. it had power to the starter motor. This morning it did not. That has been the intermittent pattern for the past few months. If I knew what part has failed in controlling the supply to the starter I would repair it. But I don't and can find little advice where to look. My initial feeling was the auto gearbox selector cable. An auto can only start in "P" or "N", possibly sensors/switches are not consistently aligning. But how to check?

I've just given it to you here:

If there is no voltage there, you will know to look further back in the circuit.
If there is voltage there, you will know that the solenoid needs further attention.
