Default New Alternator.

Hi all!

Had a new alternator fitted yesterday, bigger job than I would have expected!! Fortunately, I had taken out the AA Breakdown cover recommended on here so it only cost me the £25 excess.

One problem is that the odometer on the car is showing 999999 and not moving. The trip is working normally. Obviously I will contact garage on Monday if neccesary but wondered if anyone on here knows a simple solution to save me having to take it back in.

Well, you can always hope!

Thanks in advance.

Hi Greg, welcome, you can try a battery off reset, before you disc battery, make sure you have radio codes etc or if you have biult in sat nav you follow the correct shutdown procedure. then just disc battery and leave for 20 mins. if that doesn't solve it you may need to visit the mileage correction people as the IPK can be reset. otherwise it is a new IPK and a session on a T4 computer to solve the problem. This fault can occur if the cars have had a flat battery and had the jump leads on them.

Thanks for the very quick reply!

Will try the battery off to see if that works. No satnav so straight forward. Know it was working when it went in as I gave the mileage to the AA guy!

As a newbie to the Rover, what is an IPK and T4?

Thanks.

No luck with the battery disconnection! Will have to be back to the garage on Monday.

Sorry for delay Greg

IPK, is the instument pack itself ( speedo rev counter etc)
T4, this is the computer specific to talk to our cars, xpart centres have them and some members on here have their own (around £4k new ) trick is to find one with an operator who knows how to use it properly. Best way is via recommendation in your local area.

It's possibly a spike from jumpstarting that's caused the problem, or they may have disturbed an earth on the engine.

Failing that, you might find a milegae correction specialsyt can cure it.

I currently have the 999999 problem with mine it happened when I refitted the battery after having replaced the clutch. I have had it on a t4 but it cant cure it. The only way to sort is a miliage correction company. I spoke to one on thursday and he told me that he had just done one that morning and had another booked in for friday. He says its a voltage spike that corrupts the speedo eeprom chip. He says its easy to sort but its £100.

That sounds bang on the money, a T4 will only code a new IPK to the car, not clear the corruption. Mileage correction is the answer in this case, last i heard it was £70 to £80 so about right.
