Default Stiff/reluctant to go in to gear when cold

Noticed my 75 1.8 is a bit reluctant going in to gears when it's cold and eases as it warms up.

It's old - 2000 W reg, but only done 43k miles. Had a new clutch and slave with previous owner.
Any ideas or is this just how they are?

Is it any better if you pump the clutch pedal 2 or 3 times before attempting to change? Does it grate when you move into 1st from stationary in neutral, with a jerk as it goes in? A drain and change of gear oil may help - suspended particles in old oil provide friction and drag, as does the wrong oil. Hopefully, your car is too low mileage to have worn synchromesh. Also remove the master cylinder cap (above the pedal) and check it has enough fluid.

If the clutch feels ok, then go for a gear oil change.

I had a Rover that had a clutch change and the garage put the wrong oil in.
In cold weather made the gear change almost impossible.
I drained off and refilled with MTF94 , it was a PG1 gearbox,
The difference was amazing!

I'll try pumping the clutch next time. Its not crunchy or graunchy at all,
just tight and doesnt want to go in. I think if you try harder or come out in to neautral clutch up and try again, or blip the revs it goes in.
However when its warmed up its a lot easier.

What gearbox oil should it take?

Do these have gear cables or rods?

I also have a W reg 75 but its a cdt, the gear changes have allways been stiff, I have recently had a new clutch fitted and opted for a gearbox oil change, but still stiffish. I would say the manual gearbox is the one thing that lets the 75 down, had mine been an auto I think driving would have been more pleasurable.

If your 75 is a 1.8 petrol? Then it should be the PG1 gearbox, which is basically a Honda gearbox. MTF94 is the stuff you need.
They are very sensitive to wrong oil being put in.
In warmer weather you can get away with it, but now it's started to drop cooler you'll start to have issues.

If you take your car for a very long run, then the heat transfer from the engine will thin out the gear oil and your gear changes become easier.
If this doesn't happen, then it may be another issue.

You cant do any wrong by giving it an oil change though!

Mmmm,

I'll try and find out.
I thought ( perhaps wrongly ) that all the 1.8 k had PG1's.

Looks like it's not the PG1, but the oil listed still seems to be MTF94 in some listings.
In other listings 75w80 HR fluid ( Honda / Rover )

Like with my ZS, ( with a PG1 ) it appears there are different thoughts on what should be put in it!

Looks like the 1.8 in the 75 is the Getrag 'box.
