Default KV6 18 year old cambelts replaced

Have spent the last few weekends replacing the cambelts on my 2001 Rover 75. These were the original belts with 57,000kms.

Those belts look remarkable while still on the car. Wonder what they will look like when they are taken off, and bent backwards to show if there are any cracks between the teeth? There is also ‘chobling’ along the outside edge of the one belt I can see.

Inlet manifold set screws need nipping up too as can be seen from the coolant stains. Typical after a few thousand miles of bedding in.

Thank you John for posting that evidence. My belts, from a 1999 Rover 75 with 90,000 miles, were the same.

That's the sensible conclusion Emiel. My careful examination revealed that it's the tensioner and idler pulley bearings which wear and it's very likely that a broken belt is a consequence of this, not an intrinsic fault in the belt.

I can answer that for you David. They look absolutely fine, easily capable of a further 10,000 miles service.

'Chobling' is not in my dictionary I'm afraid David!
If I may say so, you're making the mistake of beginning with a belief, then looking for reasons to uphold it. The correct scientific approach is, as I am sure you know, the other way around; begin with the evidence and the explanation follows that. This is what John116 and I have done and it demonstrates that the belts can safely last for 18 and 20 years respectively.

you can tell they have aged from this image below. The composition of the material has changed as shown by the brown sections - I bet those section will feel different to the blacker sections to the touch. They probably could have lasted another 10 plus years though - but for such a critical component, it really is not worth the risk. (Simon, that is looking at the visible evidence, whilst not knowing I cannot believe that MGR fitted striped belts. So with that visible evidence, make a judgement of having it whipped off, to be tested in a lab, for chemical composition, that is the scientific approach is it not? see an issue, and test why it is thus - if it tests out ok, I would refit for further use)

Exactly. I don't understand why people skimp on such a critical component in a car they wish to keep. When I picked up my current V6 it was overdue on time (mileage was WAY under), but there's no sense in not having it done. Repairs should NEVER be looked at as a percentage of a car's value - otherwise a full set of mid range tyres would become 'uneconomical'

Alan,

Please can you reduce the size of your photograph. It's so enormous that the thread has become unmanageable on my computer. We can all see the pattern on the belt without the enlargement. Thanks.

I CAN understand why some skimp on this or any component (critical or otherwise) for financial reasons, time constraints, even ignorance. I can even understand 'out of principle' on non critical components. I speak from experience on all of the former. I could not state fact based upon it, nor in good conscience contradict years of, and millions spent on research by professionals (even those with vested interest - we have laws to protect consumers against those interests).
