If there's no air or gas in the coolant then it's unlikely to have gone across a bore.

If there's no oil in the system and there's no coolant in the oil then it's not gone across an oilway.

If there's no white, sweet smelling smoke out the back then it's unlikely to be getting into the bores and being burnt.

I've had literally the same thing happen to me last week and after asking on here I've done the Viton seals on the cap, taken some coolant out of the header tank as it was overfilled and it's been fine since.

That waterpump, was it genuine? The symptoms sound like those VW waterpumps that the impellers are faulty on, the plastic impeller just sits on the spindle and doesn't rotate.

Yes heater is fine.
Have today changed the header tank . On my run to work all seems ok.
So now have no coolant loss as yet.
Its looking like a list of faults have come together at the same time. Will never know what started the roll.
But all the parts was 19 years old so may be weak or just warn with age.
Now it's over cool running at around 88c only going up when in traffic or slow driving.
But at least its looking like no coolant loss.
I hope to do a flush of the system this week if I can find a good way of doing it.

Thanks to all for the help .
Steve

Changed header tank ???

All OK now so did you find anything wrong with the tank you took off.? If the problem has gone then it must have been the tank or the pipes to it.

Or the refilling and bleeding procedure used beforehand.

On my run tonight to work all seemed good.
Ran mostly at 88c .
Left to cool for a few hours popped out .
Only to find coolant around the header tank.
So problem still not solved. Again it looks like it hits the 100c and when fan kicks in coolant over flows.
Hopefully replacement cap will be here tomorrow. See
What that does.
Wonder if the release valve on the old cap is faulty.
Rings on the old cap are new so not much else to change.

From what you've said I feel fairly certain a new header tank cap will cure the water loss.--
