He probably sees himself as a ‘character’ and beyond reproach. In his world the fall from grace doesn’t affect his privileges.
I have sympathy for his mother. In her world, especially right now, the effect must be saddening to say the least. How she manages to put such a brave face on goes to show her courage in its true light.
