Hello thanks for that, all I know is that the fan the garage got was not the correct one, it was from smc, and they had to change the wires around,
I been wanting to take my bumper off so will look at the wires,

As for what fan it was I know it don't have the resister that you can see in the grill?

Ah right, that's a different scenario then!
Above fault finding was assuming you had the 2 speed motor with resistor.

Sounds like the Garage supplied you with a half duff old type 3 speeder, which has no SPEEDS left at all due to worn brushes.

Advice to all is not to buy a used 3 speed fan unless it's done under 20k miles Chances of that these days are pretty slim.

It's not worth all the labour of fitting an unknown used motor, only to have to attend to it again a few months down the line. (false economy etc)

Good luck
Jules

Jules did indeed send poor John off into town to get some milk the minute he arrived! tsk tsk.. And just as well he did too as by then Jeff was looking at my flask of coffee with thirsty eyes!

Good job you came John, coz my car was in bits, and Jules car was trapped behind it, and the village is a long walk away!

I will go see Jeff and interogate him about the missing bisciuts, coz he is thin as a rake but could eat for England! ..

Alex? while you have the front off don't forget to check your "O" rings and stuff. If you need more info I expect Jules will tell you what you need to look out for.

1.8 & KV6 tests are very similar (wire colours differ but plug pins are the same) but engine has to be running on Petrol versions.
V8 tests differ from this & will follow shortly (wire colours differ and test results

Um, don't suppose you'd mind adding the V8 test procedure, please? I'm fairly sure I have a 2 speed fan (Oct 2003 car) and would like to be sure it's working as intended.

If you swap an 2 speed early (2002) fan assembly for later 2 speed with gold resistor is simply plug & play or are wiring changes or a T4 session needed for it be recognised and operate as it should please.

Chips
You mean change early 3 speed to a 2 speed?

It's plug & play provided its from a petrol variant as in your case.
Diesel fans have a PWM PCB inside the control box and one signal relay wire is on a different pin a the plug end.
No T4 work required.

For more info see Fan threads on here (plenty)!!
You are quite welcome to read the tech info in my forum shop or eBay shop links below

Good luck
Jules

Hi Jules,

I've seen a diesel system with the slate (grey) and blue/red thin signal wires swapped over at the loom connectors. Is this what you've found? If so, have you any explanation why MGR would do this? Did they change the loom wiring to match?

Simon.

My 2002 CDT has clocked 170000km and the 3speed fan is still working fine at LOW speed (demist check), I mostly have ECON on instead of AUTO.

Intresting to read how to test:
LOW speed (switch demist on)
MED speed (bridge trinary connector)
HIGH speed (demist on and then bridge trinary connector)
But when exactly are these 3 speeds used in real live situations? How to observe them?

If I understood right the trinary is aswell a temp switch as a pressure switch? Does 'tri' stand for triple action?
Or is it a double pressure switch like explained here: http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/atta...7&d=1156426613

Since I bought the car new I Always found that the always-on-fan is kinda annyoing and overkill when riding at high speed.
Why didn't they implemented a temp sensor like in the linked PDF?
