After fitting the inline 'stat, it still took about 5 miles to reach the 9 o'clock position. Only reaching the magical 88 degrees when pressing on, on the motorway. Whilst it was reaching the 9 o'clock position, it wasnt reaching the optimum 88. The problem was caused by a non watertight inline thermostat. I urge you to check this prior to fitting. Fill the bowl of the inline stat with cold water, and make sure no water leaks through. If it does, return it. Once I fitted a non leaking inline stat, it reached 75 within 2-3 miles, and 88, a mile or so later, all with normal driving (ie not under load) Non watertight videos Watertight videos Jule's Installation How To.

Once warmed up ( about 5kms of twisty turny country roads ) mine ranges from 84° to 95° depending on driving.
I don't think I've ever had a constant 88° |

What tends to happen is itll hit 89/90° the stat will open and it'll step its way down to 84° then creep back up to 88/90° and start all over again. Unless I'm pulling up a hill then it' all nudge into the mid 90's. Isn't that what its supposed to do? I thought the stats on these cars was binary...its open its shut? If that's the case wont there will always be a temperature fluctuation while the water in the block reheats and the water in the rad cools The only way I can see there not being fluctuation is to fit some kind of thermal mixing valve. |

Yes, all wax stats behave that way, especially with diesels that don't pump much heat into the coolant. The radiator removes heat faster than the engine generates it so the temperature profile is less linear than with a petrol engine.

I've averaged 49.6 mpg over the last year which, I guess, is satisfactory. This is with the original 13 year old thermostat. |
