Mmm,, but you do appear to single out 'poorly maintained diesel vehicles' Is there something about poorly maintained petrol vehicles that excludes them from this criticism?

No mention of smoke, particulates or smell. Just that some drivers don't wash their cars, some drivers don't maintain their cars. You appear to have singled out diesels for some unrelated personal reason. Whilst at the same time driving a 2.5 litre automatic v6 built in 2004.

So why aren't you driving a 1.8 manual? Because your assertion that your concern is pollution is a smokescreen [ ] for your actual problem. You don't like the smell of diesel engines. All your other arguments added later don't really matter - you are only trying to justify your original post.

If you actually check the green ratings, and I have just checked the Next Green Car ratings for rover 75s (NGC) (lower is better)

1.8 manual = 47
1.8 Auto = 56
2.0 petrol manual = 57
2.5 petrol manual = 58
2.0 Diesel manual = 62
2.0 Diesel auto = N/A
2.0 Petrol auto = 63
2.5 Petrol auto = 66

(along with missing the 2.0 diesel auto , the v8 is also absent from the list ).

So, if it's an emissions concern you have why not drive a 1.8?

Of course I've only concerned myself with Rover 75s here but as the forum is 75andzt I won't feel guilty for that.

It is mildly amusing that someone is surprised they are getting some flak for criticising people for driving cars on a forum for the very same cars especially as members here are probably going to service and look after their cars far better than most.

The latest diesel's are roughly on par with the latest petrol cars in terms of emissions.

I agree, older diesels aren't as good, but older petrol cars are not that good either.

What would the OP like us to do? scrap all cars over two years old? Remember, it would have to be a rolling two years to keep up with technology.

Just remind me, why you are on a forum for cars both petrol and diesel that is old technology because they stopped making the 75 and ZT in 2005. I would have thought you would be driving a BMW I3 or something. Emission-free! ya right, where does the electric come from, emission-free power stations? or Nuclear power stations? Let me just remind you of chernobyl, Look what that did for the environment.

I will also point out, I own a 75 diesel though choice. I prefer the power delivery of the diesel power plant. In my opinion, it is the ideal power delivery for a road car. I didn't buy it because it's better on fuel, I don't care what my car does to the gallon, I am lucky that I afford to run anything I like. I bought my 75 as a bit of nostalgia, the best of British. At least the Birmingham area will have cleaner air since the factory closed and thousands of people lost their jobs!

Here's where I always see through the statistics often it's older larger diesels being compared against modern petrols with much smaller / less powerful engines.

The truth is that the admittedly broad categories of the Euro rating system put all of our cars I believe in the Euro 3 band regardless. I.e. for all practical environmental regulation (read LEZ and ULEZ) all our cars fare the same whether a NASP 1.8 manual or a 2.5 v6 auto and everything inbetween. (Please correct if I'm mistaken - I haven't checked the various types against the London zones). As Euro 4 was new in January 2005 then all of our 75s originally met the highest standard then enforced in the Euro zone.

All this twaddle about ‘emissions ‘ is just that. Do these supposedly very clever people really think they know what is going to happen? They are idiots in the first degree. Yes really. I can remember about 1950 we were told that we were entering a frozen era. Everything was going down the pan. It was going to be an average of 10/15 degrees colder, with winters that would last from November to April in frozen isolation. What happened to that prediction? I reckon we can thank manufacturers of high emission vehicles for saving us from all freezing to death according to these ‘experts’. I wonder what the next ‘fad’ will be.

I don't see any problem with OP's first post. He made a post based on what he observed.

If you have a well maintained diesel, then great. But, he is right in the there are many diesel cars on our roads that belch out smoke like a Russian locomotive.

I drive a diesel - but I also see a lot of diesels that display the characteristics which he observed.

Why do the diesel proponents so often appear to have something to prove?

Why do petrol car drivers get at diesel drivers?

Drivers of diesel Rover 75s and ZT's don't complain about Petrol cars

We are all here because we love the cars, petrol or diesel.

I wouldn't worry about petrol or diesel, sooner or later we will all get banned and have to drive electric anyway.
