No Mike, you do not need to disconnect the battery. Your charger's connections to the battery are identical to those of the alternator. You just need to observe the polarity of the charger's crocodile clips: red to the positive battery terminal and black to the negative. It's only carelessness or ignorance which causes damage.

Many thanks Simon. I tend to be very nervous about wrecking the ECU and worry about any voltage spikes coming from the battery charger.
