The four cylinder K Series use a wasted spark system Jon, but still use a cam sensor.
Whilst they can run 180 degrees out, the fuel will be injected with the inlet valves closed, so you may not get good atomisation as it gets sucked in on the next crankshaft revolution.

Just a quick update on this thread. The wiring on the crank sensor had been to close to the exhaust downpipe and fried the insulation. New CP sensor and harness, everything is OK Securely strapped away from the exhaust.
Have to say that the bodgers had been there at some point earlier, so there was some kind of home-made harness made to the earlier CP sensor.

All well on this one for now

A common issue on the 1.8t - as the Crank sensor is mounted on the front bell housing behind the turbo -so the wiring can get fried - damage to these wires can also fry the ECU - i have recently re-sheathed the crank wiring with brand new heat resistant material.

Apologies for being a bit pedantic , but the 4-cylinder is correctly known as the K16 , based on the number of valves
There was an earlier K8 version .
