David did you ever get the selector adjusted? If not the garage might not know about that issue?

I wondered if the bendix had broken up and done as Trikey said, and dropped inside the bell housing? I had this happen when I had my Daimler 250 V8.That also happened when it was freezing cold. Had me laying in 18 inches of snow with my old overcoat on( I’m not as hard as Brian). Would not think the engine had seized.

I recently had all the symptoms of a seized engine but it turned out to be the alternator bearing which had disintegrated and broken up jamming the pulley solid. I did however have a few miles of screeching on and off as a warning. I couldn't accept a seized engine without warning. Whipped the auxillary belt off and engine was fine.
I still find it hard to believe that this stalled the engine without breaking the belt, so could any of the ancillary bearings failing give the same symptoms. As has been said needs a competent mechanic to get involved.

Try turning it over with the plugs removed ... most significantly number 4.

Good thinking! I had that happen, hadn't used the 1.8T for some considerable time and it wouldn't turn over. The IMG had weeped allowing coolant into no 4 cylinder hydrolocking the engine. Syringe and a length of rubber tubing cleared it.

Is it me or does £150 sound a bit cheap labour wise for a garage to change an engine? To me this sounds a bit too cheap for a garage.

Nope, it sounds like a price of someone who doesn't know what they are doing........I wouldn't change an engine for £150

The “going rate” for a competent garage these days is around £60+ VAT, so yes it’s far too cheap! Sure, there are plenty competent amateurs, retired mechanics or people working “on the side” who may well do that job for £150, but no business worth it’s salt would do it for that kind of money!

So I've decided that I'm going to get it back from the garage Monday, and give TS Autos a buzz to see if they can help me out.

In the meantime, I'll try some of the suggestions out and let everyone know.
