Hi there,

Can anyone tell me what effect bypassing the intercooler on a Rover 75 Diesel would be?

Thanks in advance

Massive lost or slight loss?

I realise it will be down on power but any idea?

It's guessing time folks.
I'll guess you can expect a 20% power loss.
But how will you measure it? Guess I suppose.

I think knowing what the intercooler does first will help ???
But basicaly it is way of cooling the gasses and compansating for the heating caused by the byproduct of the turbo. so leave it off will have a dramatic effect on the performance and over heat the turbo .....thus causing the turbo/supercharger to go BANG...... is the simple answer ps the loss of compresion will happen so bare in mind of the disadvantages of not having the inter fitted, air to air and air to liquid have no way of cooling .

This will:
Wikipedia
An intercooler or charge air cooler, is an air-to-air or air-to-liquid heat exchange device used on turbocharged and supercharged (forced induction) internal combustion engines to improve their volumetric efficiency by increasing intake air charge density through nearly isobaric (constant pressure) cooling. A decrease in air intake temperature provides a more dense intake charge to the engine and allows more air and fuel to be combusted per engine cycle, increasing the output of the engine.

So why would you want to do this????
The engine is designed to operate with this equipment fitted, so it does not make any sense to by-pass it.
Or am I missing something.

Not sure that it will have any affect on the turbo at all. The air is cooled after it has been compressed by the turbo not before.
Another thing to think about is heat getting into the engine, we had big trouble on bikes running 30psi and no intercooler. Lose power very quickly as the whole engine just burns up with air entering the engine VERY hot!!!

Maybe he want to make room for a water injection kit.....

OR...... NOS

Definitely not good to remove the intercooler and not replace it with some other means of cooling things down!

Can't get a replacement intercooler at a reasonable price right now. Hence the reason for temp repair.

I can't see it having any effect on the turbo as the air is hot after going through it and is cooled before entering the engine. I see the problem about the extra heat in the engine though, maybe as you were running 30 psi boost that caused a problem.

Maybe someone can tell me where to get an intercooler at a reasonable price?
