As I understand it, the TM unit is completely separate from the radio/ satnav unit. There is no connection between them at all.

The TMC as used for Satnav gets its signal from data on the back of the ordinary FM radio stations and you recieve the national problems marked on the satnav map. TM is a very local thing, it only works around a small area - you only receive it when you are on the main roads and motorways fitted with the blue cameras. These cameras process the flow of cars, to determine if there is an holdup/delay.
