Default Cam cover stripped threads

Hi all,

I decided to change the cam cover gasket on my ZR 1.8 k series and my torque wrench played silly buggers on me and nearly stripped a few threads. I could feel it wasn't right so stopped, but I think it's too late.

What are my options ?

Thanks

Pete.

I know it's a bit late for you, but for others, cam covers and the like don't get touched by my torque wrench. I would use the general centre out crisscross pattern and a 3/8 drive ratchet. Using one hand just back of the ratchet head snug up all the bolts to the tightest repeatable "torque" with that one hand. That should be enough on a new gasket. If you're not comfortable with that, go another 1/8th turn tighter. Those things usually have a torque spec of 5-10 ft lbs - often specced in inch lbs.

Helicoils are an excellent solution, though, for you. Before that, though, I would try blowing out the bolt hole with air pressure and running a tap in to clean the threads. If there are still some threads left after that, put the bolt back in with some blue Loktite just snug like I described.

Cheers,
Glenn

They are still gripping, but they just feel a bit "soft" when tightening by hand. Most of them are nipped up and tight. It's mainly 3 that are in line with the spark plugs / coils.
I used a small torque wrench this time round because I didn't last time, and it was leaking.
If it's not leaking then I will leave it until I have to get in there again.

Pete.

Does anyone know the thread size and thread pitch ?

I think M8 for the size, but no idea on the pitch.

Is it an M8 bolt with a 13mm head (wrench size) or an M5 bolt with a 8mm head? The M5 could be 0.8 or 0.5. The M8 could be 1.25, 1 or 0.75.

Cheers,
Glenn

So the coarse thread pitch is 1 and the fine thread is 0.75. It must be a MGR special bolt to have an 8mm head.
