Question Auto gear selection issue

Gents, I am repairing a Rover 75 2.5 V6 automatic.
Engine needed changing, pistons said hello to the valves due to aux belt failure, which killed the cambelt.
I managed the engine change w/o removing the gearbox from the car, pic related.

New engine is in and running now, but...
However, I just can select R, N, & D.
Witch some force the 4 appears, but not 3 or 2, nor P

Any ideas what is wrong, because it seems stuck in both directions?

I do not know, but until someone with more experience comes along, I would suggest looking at the selector cables. It sounds like it could be as simple as this (hoping for you). Perhaps snagged on something? Or pulled somehow?

the adjustment on your gear actuator switch may be out of alignment.
It sits on top of the gearbox almost under the airbox.
You can slacken off two bolts, put the gear stick in neutral, adjust the switch until neutral lights up in the console.
If there is still a problem check the gear selector linkage under the box is not loose or has slipped.
Re the actuator switch, they can also wear out or play up as oil from the throttle body drips onto it and the internal switch plate dont connect properly.
Also check the big transmission connector plug under radiator pipes is fully connected and twisted together.

The cables can jump out of their mountings on the box I believe.

In order to lift the engine out did you move the gearbox away from the engine ??? Did you have to do anything with the selectors before you made this move ???

Issue is solved

The selector arm was bent a little at the downside, between the mounting and the moveable part,

This happend possibly when supporting the gearbox, during reassembly of the engine

Thank you to all the contributors
