It's more to do with the fact originally we were told when it's paid for it will be free. As the government now see it as a cash cow, now it's paid for you are charged to still use it rather than tolled. Usual lies from the people at the top.

Precisely

Usual apathy.

Coincidentally I crossed the bridge last Monday and drove back last night through the tunnels and was unaware of the automatic Toll Charge ... thankfully my hosts at the Uni of Kent reminded me and I paid via smart phone from the car park!

I don't go that way very often, but my ZT ate up the miles very nicely indeed

Probably acceptance rather than apathy.

Yep I have opened an account for two cars, mine and a friends, once the account is opened there is no time scale on how often you use the crossing. Once the account gets down to 10 quid ( you can chose your own minimum) its topped up automatically by direct debit, that way you can never get caught out if your account runs out of credit.

The same topic about "we were promised it'd be free after the debt was paid off" crops up every time the toll improvements get mentioned.
It was more than 12yrs ago that the then government made a U-turn and quoted that the fee was necessary to fund a 10yr transport programme that would be used in other areas of the country.
Traffic levels continue to rise and the infrastructure has to be paid somehow and better it comes out of the road users pocket than general taxation of the entire country.
I for one dont like paying but the level is palatable and the improvements that I've seen Southbound and those predicted north bound will far more benefit me than the £1.67 I pay to cross it.
Anyone who has suffered the long delays on a regular basis in the past will be over the moon that this automation is now in place and the nay-sayers tend to be those once per year folk who dont necesarialy put a premium on their time, of which I think I now save around 1 hr per week.

The high level of fuel duty would more than cover maintenance and improvements if it were not diverted into funding illegal wars and foreign aid,to mention but two.
