My tourer diesel auto does 600 mile on a tank full and as it holds 12 gallon I make that 50 mpg or there abouts, last checked at the weekend when I drove from Yorkshire to Hastings and back.
And I personally think the FBH aids economy. |

It perhaps would if your stat is working ok.
But what happens with the fbh if you have '7o/c syndrome' and the coolant stays at 70c or lower? I know it's the ambient temperature that controls whether the fbh kicks in at start-up but at what coolant temperature does it shut off? |

I get 44-46 mpg out of my diesel auto on long runs, and booting it doesn't really change it much unless you can keep your foot down for a long time, which is rare these days innit...
Round town the 30 mph limit means I rarely get out of 2nd gear, so 25mpg is about norm.... ... |

Leicester to Dewsbury (engine already warm) - and return journey which needed the fbh to warm things up later -- 57.6mpg on the trip with a manual gearbox. Even taken as optimistic that's over 50mpg. This was borne out by the amount of fuel used (although I didn't do a brim to brim). Manual / Auto shouldn't make a huge difference motorway cruising, unless you've left the Auto in Sport mode. Crusing speed around 75 (no cruise control, yet) - but must admit the sections at 50mph through the roadworks do help that figure.
I'm sure I could get that down to 45mpg if I played with the pedal under my right foot a bit more. .

Does anyone know if blanking off the top rad grill will make the engine run hotter on a Diesel.

Used to get 50mpg with my manual cdt on long runs, have managed a rare 47mpg with my auto cdt, usually 44-46 ish and mid 30's around town.
I've mentioned before though-that I get more out of the auto if i put it in 'Snow; mode. Just try it in different driving conditions--it puts it in a higher gear sooner and starts off in second. Obviously a different driving habit has to be adopted,as you can't set off at roundabouts very quickly. FBH is usually switched on below 12 deg to aid quicker warm up. Ken. |
