Default Tailgating

At the weekend I had a girl sat on my back bumper for the best part of ten miles. On the way back a young chap did the same. Touching the brakes made them drop back a bit, but they soon closed the gap again. If I had to stop quickly they would have been in the boot.

I was doing a steady 60 mph and there were stretches of straight road with nothing coming, but they didn't try to overtake. What was the point? It seems to be getting more common too.

I'm thinking of attaching something on the rear window blind to say, "Too Close - Drop Back", or similar. Would it do any good? It is extremely unnerving and very dangerous.

I don't want my Connie written off due to some idiot driving too close!

Sadly it is all too common and my number one pet peeve.

I'm planning to get a dual lens dashcam and one of these stickers.

Once the cretins realize they'll be appearing on YouTube soon I suspect it will cause them to back off.

Try giving your windscreen a real good squirt,,,the splatter from that makes them drop back, and take the hint.

If you are unhappy with the situation, I was told by a police officer slow down to a comfortable speed and let them overtake or better still pull over.

I've certainly done the slowing down bit, having stopped that thing of dabbing the brakes with the left foot some years ago.

Slowing down to a crawl sometimes makes them make a move, or, if the opportunity arises, run closer to the edge of the road and they get all the rubbish flying at them.

Over the last couple of years I've seem to have noticed a trend amongst tail gaiters.

I've found that there are a lot of young girls and women who seem to be totally oblivious to how close they are driving to the car in front of them. So many times I've had women drive so close to the rear of my car, especially around town. Yet when I move over on a dual carriage way they don't overtake, just sit there in the second lane just behind your car. It's like driving that close to the car infront is normal to them. Even brake testing doesn't get them to back off.

Guys on the other hand do it intentionally when they want to go faster than you are.

Carry a ten gallon oil drum in the boot, then turn on the tap, that always works for me,

This is one that really gets my goat as well. I generally slow down to try and make them back off a bit, then speed up to open up the gap, and hope they get the message. It works sometimes but not always. I used to think this was intentional aggressive driving, but As Rick-Sta says, some of them (mainly women, but not always), are completely oblivious.
