Default Snow Chains?

Some one left a set of snow chains next to my drivers door yesterday with a note.

"I had these on my Rover 75 and thought you may want them"

Very kind of him (it was a him as he pitched up later for a chat)

What's the verdict on using them? in the event we have snow of course?

He said he had to jack up the car to fit them properly and they were great when required.

Any opinions before I shred my tyres?

Cheers

I have some,,only used them once, about six years ago, when it really snowed.
Worked well and went passed a lot of stuck cars.
Should only be used on snow,,as soon as you are on the road surface again-remove them.
A good idea is to get used to putting them on and off a few times,so when your stuck at the side of the road in the dark,at least you'll have an idea how to fit them.
I took photos of them -fitted -and printed them off,as they say 'a picture says a thousand words'.
Ken.
ps.I have always had snow tyres on spare wheels for Winter until last year when I thought I'd try Michelin Cross-climates,which are meant to be good.

They do work but i would not imagine much opportunity to find out. The first breakthrough is finding out that it is still possible to drive in snow so you get chains, then after using them a few times realising they are a pain to fit, usually in the dark, its wet, its dirty and you are on your way to work and get there filthy, so you progress to snow socks, much easier to fit but leave you still wet and cold, then the ultimate is to upgrade to winter tyres and never need them ever again.

Think of winter tyres as something lime a nuclear deterent. As soon as you have a set, it never snows again.

Keep a set of gloves in the car and a bag to put them in after use
