Could be part of the solenoid pack is playing up, there are filters in the labyrinth which could be blocked. If the gearbox works for a short while, the symptoms point to fluid starvation. If the fluid that's in there is dark and stinky, it indicates a slipping clutch burning, again could be due to a fluid pressure drop, a cracked reverse piston will cause a pressure drop also, and will affect forward gears. This is under the first cover on the box and is very easy to change, with the gearbox in place, careful reassembly is necessary though.

Hi Steve,
thank you for your input,I take it the filters are behind the solenoid cover at the front?
Am I able to physically see or check to see if they are blocked,or even blow through them or are they in a section that just needs replacing?
As far as I can make out,the reverse piston is behind the side cover.
The other thing is if I have to change the worn clutch plates ,is this a' box out'
job?
Ken.

Ken; don’t allow yourself to be distracted from the most likely cause matching your symptoms: failure of the reverse piston.
There is only one filter in the JATCO and it is only accessible after major dismantling. It’s not a routinely replaceable item and doesn’t normally cause problems.
You won’t have worn clutch plates either.

Hope it is Simon - a relatively easy job that can be carried out with the gearbox still in the car.

Hi Simon,mike,
It's what I was thinking, but you can get distracted onto other things, when you haven't tackled this job before...I'm used to 'manuals' apart from my BW35 that is....so after doing a pin check, where all resistances were within tolerances ,I'm going to have a look at 'said reverse piston' and see where we go from there,
Meanwhile just been exercising my BW35 and had lunch at the seaside..
Thank you for your experienced help.
Ken

That's the spirit Ken - if in doubt chill out.

I think there are a couple of 'how to's', here is one of them:

An ATSG repair manual for the JATCO is available from a company in the UK (I have one).

Oh come on Ken, stop teasing us! What is your other car then?

I like the play on words, the English language is great isn't it,,''manual box''as apposed to a book,
The BW35 is in a Staaag as J Clarkson referred to it.

I had an orange(pimento) one in the mid 90s,this one's royal blue.

Getting back to the Rover---the reverse piston --the top has totally sheared off, can't see this in any other references on the internet,,but shall order the 're-enforced' one and see how it goes,
Ken.
