Have run Automatics for over 40 years and every one has crept - some faster than others!

Thank you, First-Things-First (post 10)

Very Interesting, and I didn't know that.

Possibly then, an inbuilt spirit level (like some modern phones have) is permanently issuing a hill start command.

Ah, but no, would you not expect to see the revs rise up a little?

"Creep" is the drag caused by the torque convertor turning in the auto transmission fluid. Have you got the correct grade of fluid in there? It is perfectly normal for an auto to creep as you say but if it is excessive, perhaps the fluid is too thick and is causing additional friction. A fluid change doesn't do any harm (advised in fact to remove old fluid and contaminants). Excessive is the key word here.

Every auto I have owned, has crept forward, they all do. If they didn't, when you tried to accelerate...it wouldn't go anywhere.

Remember, you can't select D, 2,3, or 4, from P or R, unless you have your foot on the foot brake. It's a safety feature in case the gear lever was accidentally knocked into gear, you have brakes applied.

I have probably confused the issue by calling it "creep"

My car goes at 5 mph, without any throttle, maybe I should have said "Fast Creep"

Please refer back to posts 1,3, 7 & 9. where I give details

Regards

Mike

That's what it's designed to do, ie you'll never roll back on a hill-start. I never use the hand-brake except for sentimental reasons: shove it in Park. Life's much simpler that way.

Same here. A handbrake is largely pointless on an auto other than for use as an emergency brake. I use mine every now and again to prevent it seizing.

I love the 'creep' of an auto. Makes low speed manoeuvres and crawling through traffic nice and easy.

Should the pawl in the gearbox ever mislocate or fail,(and they can and do occasionally!) the handbrake would be the backup.

If I remember correctly, the handbook tells you to:- pull the handbrake on and put your foot on the brake pedal when taking the gear lever out of park. Wonder why that was put in the handbook? Might be because of the creeping you refer to. Anyway as many have said,’mine creeps also’. Worse in the cold weather, not so much in the warm weather. Once the gearbox warms up it does not creep so much.
