The car was parked on the road everything was switched off only been parked there about 30 minutes. We had drained the oil on the son's civic but could not get the filter housing undone. He was going to take my car to get a tool from euro car parts, he said something weird is going on with your car the lights and hazards are on I knew straight away it was on fire while he called the fire brigade I grabbed a fire extinguisher but it was too late it was well a blase. We have borrowed the daughters jazz to drive to Scotland as it was to late to get a courtesy car from the insurance company.

That's a real blow to you but cars can be replaced. At least it was parked & nobody was inside.

LSM for sure must have got wet then shorted out, only good grace you were not driving at the time, the LSM is worth checking at least once a month for water damage and any build up of dust etc.
As above remove the self taper and replace with plastic scrivets you can rip out. 1 2 3 4 I have an how to on this which i have not posted yet

News to me this one, sorry to hear about such an unfortunate incident just out of the blue like that.
First mention I've ever heard of this potential fire hazard despite being on this forum for 9 or so years. It has however prompted me to suss out and go and get a fire extinguisher for the car from Screwfix on Monday. something that I have thought about getting before but never got round to it. In fact I'm getting two, one for the house which won't do any harm either. https://www.screwfix.com/p/firechief...sher-1kg/5534h Where do you get those scrivets in your pictures from Steve? |

The scrivets are the same ones used to hold the scuttle panel to the plenum.

Flippin heck, I never knew this about the LSM.
I wonder if getting it covered in conformal coating will stop this happening. Hope you get another 75 and gutted it was as duotone too. |

If it’s any consolation I hope you enjoy your visit to Glen Nevis, it’s beautiful up there and especially with this nice warm weather.
Don’t forget to visit Neptune’s Staircase to the north of Fort William. It’s a series of locks taking the boats up from sea level up into the Caledonian Canal and onwards to Loch Ness. |

If it's water that causes this problem, does anyone know how it gets into the LSM ? After all, it's very well buried into the dash.
Or do we have any evidence that it could be dust that ignites and starts the fire ??

Like several others, this has come as a complete shock to me.
My sympathies for your loss, and again as others have said, you are safe, and a car can be replaced. If anything is to be gained out of this, perhaps a discussion on the LSM (light switch module) and can it's supply be individually fused down, probably not. The only other instance of a 75 catching light, that I've read about, involved somebody who suspected the ballast (resistor?) on some sort of High Powered Lights. If there is a connection here (no pun intended, far too disturbing) might an isolator that you can switch off be a solution. I'm thinking of a pin that could be pulled out, to break the supply; as and when you take out the ignition key. You would lose your parking lights, but maybe save your car. Oh for the old instrumentation, an ammeter, water temp. (that's not programmed to deceive) and oil pressure gauge. The P4 oil pressure gauge doubled up as an oil level gauge, at the push of a button. Regards Mike
