He kindly pointed out that, as the younger brother, I used to get his "hand me downs" when he grew out of them and as such, he never had to have folded newspaper in his shoes!! All these years, I never knew it was just me with the holey shoes . Cliff

In the really, really bad old days when oil was just like glue in the winter a friends father used to put a piece of oily rag under the engine and set fire to it.----

Luckily we don't get winters like we did when I started driving you could be sure of snow and heavy frost all fun when you had cars with manual chokes but that's when cars were cars not laptops on wheels.

I remember having a bonfire under the diesel tank of my lorry when it was so cold it was like treacle in the tank. After about half an hour it was ‘usable’ as fuel. I went from Birmingham to Darley Dale the other side of Matlock. There were only 6 other lorries I counted that day. It was that cold there was steam coming out of the exhaust all day. For a diesel, that is rare in GB.

My Dad had a small paraffin heater under the engine of his Ford Pop in his unheated garage in winter. He also had a padded leather muff that fitted on the outside of the grille.

I used to fit a piece of thin plywood to the bottom of my radiator in my SD1 Vitesse to keep the temperature up in the winter.
I also blocked off the lower grille on our diesel 75 |

I remember sales of that type of heater always went well during the winter months. Most folks garages smelt of paraffin.---
