There seems to be such a lot of drop-link failures with so short a time on the car.

Mine are the original ones and have been in use now for 16 years.---

Is part of the problem, maybe, how they are fitted ??

Before both ends are tightened the weight of the car HAS to be on the wheels. ( Don't ask me why )--

With all these failures in this thread is it the seal that fails first letting in dirt and causing the wear or is it just seal failure ?

I can understand use of poor materials in the manufacture but surely they must be made of putty to fail in just a few short weeks.---

I spoke about fitting drop-links about a couple of years ago, about that should be tightened when the cars weight is on the wheels, as that is the official way of fitting them. Consult Rovers fitting guide. I fitted Delphi rubbish that lasted around 4000 miles on the one side in a fit of ‘preventive maintenance ‘. Some hopes. The car is sorned now while I knock a Connie KV6 into place. If I ever need to fit drop-links again, they will be Meyle. 4 year guarantee.

No need for the weight of the car to be on the wheels, they are ball joints and will spin to their position.

Pete.

I saw these recommended by Brian in another post so ordered a pair:

Not expensive admittedly but if it means anything, they seem to be well made.
I don't actually need them presently but bought them for the shelf.

I've currently have some Mayle HD links waiting to go on mine, certainly look well made. I've been using Mayle parts for a while now and must say that I've so far had no problems with any of them. Seems good stuff, higher up the price range I guess but you get what you pay for.

I have had Meyle HD fitted for 3 years and over 20k miles, still working well.

Buy cheap, buy twice comes to mind.

Not having too much activities with the MGR products any more, but what springs to mind during MOT testing, is that cars from different areas suffer with different faults, this in mind, the varied condition of roads throughout the country, different driving habits etc will play a part in the wear conditions and failures. Admitedly the mot testing I currently do seems to focus on the more modern cars with perhaps the proper OE items fitted which tend to be superior to the aftermarket ones. We try to focus on value for money, but not always the best option if they continue to fail regardless of cost. The roads round here are awful to include the legendry sunken drain covers on corner apexes which most are unavoidable !
Some drivers are quite hard on the suspension / brakes and suspect these may be the obvious victims, also the use of more country lanes accellerates the wearing process.
This is just my observations, and find it unlikely to really find exceptional quality items apart from bespoke rose jointed affairs which would probably be cost prohibitive
