Could be a poor earth? When I installed a Navall 3 reception was poor but I removed the earth lead low down under the bonnet on the nearside, cleaned it up and things were back to normal (ok rather than great), so a good cheap fix. Plan B is simply to put in an extra earth wire of course.

I have had some issues in all the cars I've owned while living in Burnley, there are areas in Burnley and surrounding areas that seem to just drop out (bridge over M65 for one) and all you get is hissing noise in regular intervals.

I'm just wondering if the local transmitters (winter hill and fence) have had output power reduced. My meriva was the worst followed by my mondeo. The reception on the rovers has been the best (work that one out!!).

So could be a transmitter issue as well as a car issue.

DAB reception seems to be generally poor. I had the use of a Jaguar XJ and the DAB radio cut out every time I went under a bridge on the A40. And that’s with a very nice standard system. Otherwise a very nice car!

There are radio dead spots all over the country.
There's one on M25 between the St Albans & M1 junctions & another on M1 as you're passing the Northampton junctions.
Both have been there for at least the last thirty years.

Not car related, but we've had a DAB radio in our bedroom for the last 20 yrs or so. Reception has always been rock solid until the last heat wave. Now, whenever we have warm weather, the signal drops out. Tried a couple of other radios with the same result .

Very odd .

[U]UPDATE[U]

Bit the bullet, clenched the bum cheeks, and drilled hole in the Zeds roof to fit roof ariel (after checking hole position about 50 times AND getting a second opinion off SWMBO).

Fitted (access was good as sits above interior light) cable was easy to run and looks good.

Time will tell if a big improvement but a short drive and reception did seem better and can now listen to radio with HRW on (it previously wiped out rhe radio as soon as switched on).

It seems the main problem was likely that some of the elements (about a third) in my HRW are dead so no real solution without replacing the rear screen

Thank you to the members who replied, it was a great help

My problem was due to the 12 - 5 volt coverter fitted to my dashcam. Every time I switched to "ignition on" from "accessories" I would lose signal. I fitted a later version and the problem has disappeared. Good reception on all stations now.

Doesn't help but I've also never had any problems with my radio in the Tourer, now 16 years old. It's as clear as any car radio I've ever had. People keep talking about the HRW aerial but I thought it ran off the rear O/S window, though it does look like a HRW.
