Default Advice on brake callipers

I have a seized nearside front brake calliper on my R75 and I've been quoted £233 by Halfords for a replacement with fitting and brake fluid etc, which seems a bit steep to me! Ebay's selling these for £29.95 !! Rimmer's is £90. A couple of hours labour to have either fitted I would guess. Which one to go for? I could have both near and offside done for the price of one Rimmer's part. I have a local friendly garage that will fit for me and I would rather do that TBH.

Just had a look.----The same seller has two different prices for the identical item. One £30.00 dearer than the other.--

PS. Easy DIY job. An hour a side.

£233 is a total rip off but then what else would you expect from Halfrauds. Even with a few problems its only an hour or so per side.

Personally I would get the £30 calipers from the bay and get your local friendly garage to replace both if you are not happy to do it yourself. Might be worth having the front flexibles replaced at the same time if you have no record of these being replaced.

That's the plan. But the price disparity between suppliers is huge. EuroCar parts have a strange refurb 'deal' that I doubt they would honour with my seized calliper on return, so that's more expensive than the Rimmer supplied part!

I put a pair of the £30 a side front calipers on my 260 18 months ago, I have done about 8k miles since and they have been great.

One of the reasons they are so cheap is because they are fitted to multiple BMW's.

I would always fit front calipers in pairs. Having fitted one on some customers cars because of budget constraints they usually complain that it pulls.

Dont forget a new set of front pads will be needed.

As above, it's a rip-off. It's a quick job for a garage to do with the car up on the ramps.

It might be worth factoring in a set of fresh pads as a seized caliper can result in uneven wear.

I've ordered near AND offside parts including callipers, brake pads and flexipipes. Came to £108 in total. So, the cost of a Halfords replacement on one side should cover both sides all in when fitted by my garage.

Good outcome . Should take no more than an hour per side at the garage.
