Default 5 wire cooling fan (ZT 190)- interchangeable?

Wondering if anyone can provide me with any more info here, unfortunately a badger ran out right in front of me a couple of weeks ago and managed to split my front bumper and damage most of the cooling system behind it.
To replace all the parts needed with new parts was going to be right-off cost unfortunately and obviously I don't want to do that.

I think I have managed to find all the other parts I need listed second hand online but the cooling fan is the sticking point. The garage has told me that I currently have a five-wire fan but neither me nor them can find one of them mentioned or listed for sale anywhere. Would anyone be able to tell me whether I can simply swap this out for another ZT 190 with air-conditioning's fan as there seems to be lots of 4 wire set ups available or whether this will then cause lots of problems with ECU and wiring etc? I have also been told by someone breaking a 190 of similar age (mine is 2001) that theirs is 6 pin? Am I right in saying they are all 6 pin so this may in fact be the right thing? Thanks in advance

The 190 will have either a 4 wire fan or a 2 wire fan, there is no other standard fitting. ( these are the wires that enter the motor itself)
The 4 wire fans are 3 speed and are prone to brush wear.
The 2 wire fans are 2 speed with an external resistor fitted ( original was silver, upgraded ones are gold)
Both are plug and play interchangeable.

For reliability if you are fitting a used fan try to find a 2 speed 2 wire one with a gold resistor.

Beware the ones off the diesel variant are not plug and play as the relay box is different.

Edit: Six pin? they will be counting the wires in the plugs the six pin one will be the older 4 wire 3 speed type and could be petrol or diesel
...... Five wire could be your garage counting the wires at the plug end which would mean you have a 2 wire 2 speed

Just ask the garage if yours has an external resistor, if so it's a 2 wire 2 speed.

This would appear to be the correct fan for your car, you can just make out the gold resistor behind the fan blade top just to the right

Hi Dave
You have a beady eye well spotted that will most certainly do the job, as long as the gold resistor is ok, but not hard to add a new one if it was needed

Thumbs up Thank you!

Thank you both for the information. Thats of huge help and means we are good to go on the repair. Big relief knowing the car will live to fight another day! Had only owned it a month and was loving it so you can imagine how much my heart sank when the insurance told me their approach would be to write it off.

I can Lyle. I've been in that position myself.
The threat can be avoided by having a TPF&T policy. Of course you would have to accept paying for any repairs to your own car (unless the other party was responsible), but that's what you're doing anyway in this case.

to the club by the way.

To confirm, just because the fan has the right number of pins at the plug end does NOT mean it is the right set up. Both petrol and diesel have 5 or 6 pins but the relay boxes are totally different and NOT a straight swap interchange.

For clarity, if you are fitting a used fan that you expect to work out of the box you need a 2 wire 2 speed with external resistor PETROL set up. the one in the ebay link is the correct fan for your car.

Yeah, it's a weird one, the company I ended up going with were actually quoting a cheaper price if I took comprehensive rather than TPF&T. I can't understand the logic from their POV and as you say I've essentially used it as a third-party policy in this case anyway.
And thank you very much, it's quite amazing having this wealth of knowledge on tap!

Right okay, I had found two cars being broken (both 190s) that I am waiting for prices from as I thought this may be a more cost effective way of getting all the bits I need. Even though these are both the same model would I still have to confirm with it is the 2 wire 2 speed set-up?

On another note, from a reliability point of view am I as well ordering the 2 wire 2 speed fan you've found even if the ones in these two cars are compatible but the older style?

Here's the 2 adverts I am enquiring to

Unfortunately you will still need to ensure they are the later 2 speed type, simple to do, all you need to know if there is a silver/gold resistor screwed to the fan shroud at the 2 o'clock position. If so then it should be the right one.

The older three speed type are prone to brush wear . These can be repaired quite cheaply but it means further stripdown of the motor and you need a decent soldering set up.

Shame about the ZT-T, looks to be in good condition from the photo (unless it is damaged at the rear or n/s) and the MOT history is very good too!
