The Beaver (post 19, link to ebay) is probably the only Bridgeport based copy, (or actual clone, as many are) that is a real improvement, on the original.

I do agree that a proper industrial weight mill runs rings around the bench mount versions etc.

Tooling does build up over time, mine is all R8 based, and there is a lot of it about.

For Macafee2's desire to collect tools; understood, and I'm much the same.

A bridgeport though, doesn't just weigh a ton (almost literally) but is close to 7 ft. tall, with the head in it's usual upright position.

Regards

Mike

although this sold https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154454611...cAAOSwy2Ngn~L7

would it be enough for DIY? I think the ones you are pointing me too are too big, too commercial or am I naive?

Horses for courses I guess, depends what you want to do. Those combined lathes and millers are (IMO) a terrible compromise and you end up with a very limited machine that’s barely capable at either milling or turning.
Honestly you’ll be better with a bench mounted miller and even those lack capability but at least most have x y and z axis.
I would say do it properly or don’t bother when it comes to machinery, but any machine is better than no machine...
