In fairness the gov wasn't the owner, so it didn't really let them go.

The governement could have lent them £100 million, but No! to state aid rules because of the curse of our lives the EU, saying that they (EU) did not mind Sarkozy giving £millions to the French firm Citreon and said DO NOT SHUT ANY FRENCH PLANTS but others were ok for cannon foder (GB), what happened next Ryton Coventry fell to the axe, this is no union its asset stripping, **** the EU. NEVER LET FOREIGNERS TAKE YOUR CROWN JEWELS..

Got to agree. The way the government saved the banks shows that it could have been done, regardless of the EU rules. A tiny fraction of what they spent on the banks would have been more than enough to save MGR.

And I'm 100% convinced that if MGR had been based in London, the government would have saved them.

You can give state aid legally within the eu. Sadly rover was too small to compete in the world stage, it needed a tie up with a large car company. Another £100m would have meant just delaying the inevitable. The rot had long since set in sadly.

So why couldn't the UK government? We are in the EU and it was an EU directive that Brown said we couldn't.

The rot hadn't set in for MG Rover they were just about to tie up with SAIC

Probably chose not to like I said at that stage, I don't think £100m would have secured the future of rover long term.

The state aid rule has been bent to suit the needs of big business and if you do not fit you get left out! The Labour Party working mans party what a load of Toss that is......

Sorry Topman the game is up crush British business to the bone until we have nothing left. Take for instance the EU wants to regulate the worlds number 1 finance centre London . How in the hell can they justify that when they have not signed off the EU accounts (due to corruption) for 15 years.

Blighty is a sweet shop once all the sweets are gone they move on like predators. The British public will have to beg for something we need to offer the world.
Manufacturing MUST BECOME A BRITISH WAY OF THINKING AGAIN OR the deficit will never go it will only grow. Lets let the Germans buy a bit from us instead.

It's impossible to say now, but it would be highly unlikey. £100m is peanuts in the global car business. The Mk1 mondeo, for example, cost are rumoured £1bn to develop. The size they would have needed to grow to to function on their own would be drawfed by a £100m.
