Exclamation My Latest Project

Well, my fingers have been idle for a while since successfully fitting cruise to my 1.8, so I thought it was time for me to start playing again.

LPG conversion, here I come

I didn't think you could do a DIY job with an LPG conversion, doesn't it have to be certified?

Yes you can, and no it doesn't.

I wouldn't trust some firm to throw a kit at my car anyway, I would rather plan where things are going, so they look right and fit properly. I wouldn't be happy if wiring and hoses looked anything but original.

I think it's ok to DIY but it will need an engineers report for insurance purposes.

Far more significant is the question of insurance - Don't ignore the fact that you are duty bound to inform your insurer if your car is modified in any way. Conversion to LPG certainly constitutes modification in the eyes of all motor insurance companies. If you forget to inform them or simply ignore the need, this omission may come back to haunt you one day. Even the slightest of accidents can bring their assessor to inspect your vehicle and he'll spot a conversion that has not been declared. This problem may result in a refusal to have your car repaired whether the accident was your fault or not. The total loss of your vehicle's value in the case of a 'write off' is then a strong possibility.

It is possible to buy a DIY conversion kit these days, fit it and have success but your insurer is unlikely to accept your word on the quality of the job and your competence to do it. This may only be remedied by a professional Engineer's report. If that turns out to be favourable to the conversion it can still cost you a lot of money. Maybe all the money your saved by fitting it yourself or more.

Beat me to it Trevor!

I wrote my own report, proving the install met or exceeded all of the LPGA COPII requirements.

Wasn't an issue for a lot of insurers anyway

Yep, that's the deal, either way, the legalities are merely a formality, I am much more excited to get the tools out

Any help gratefully received, I have no knowledge of any LPG anything, so much reading and a steep learning curve for me

Nothing wrong with copy and paste Rich, that was in case you hadn't already read it somewhere. HERE is the full article

I know a few who have fitted it, then had it checked over afterwards. All passed OK.
I'm sure you'll do fine...

Not sure if it would help with fitting but I have the factory notes somewhere that you can borrow if you like? The factory ran a course when they added it to the 75 options list for factory fitting
