When I started on the railway one of the old drivers (Donald Chalmers) told me a story. The Flying Scotsman was out and about, Pegler (the owner at the time) was travelling with it. The Newcastle driver on the loco was unfamiliar with the route north of Edinburgh so Donald went with it. When they arrived back in Edinburgh Donald got off, Pegler handed him an envelope, "there's a little something for you driver". Donald thought great, couple of quid for a few pints (it was a number of years ago!), he opened the envelope to find a photo of Pegler standing in front of the loco

Did they scrape the original paint off?

How do they stick it back on again?

I sometimes fired steam trains into Paddington and we would be rewarded with a can of coffee and bacon sandwiches from the buffet car, and the guard would do a sweep of the coaches and find all the girly mags stuffed down the back of the seats. .

When I was a yob, I believe 1969, I went to the Boys and Girls Exhibition at Olympia and stood on the footplate of the Flying Scotsman.

Quite a few years later, I found it in pieces, in a rail shed at Southall in West London undergoing a rebuild then, and I believe that was around 1984.

Good luck to them and thier project.

Best jobs food wise were the "Officer's Specials", a single observation coach for engineers. They had a member of staff on them who delt with the food, doorstep ham sarnies, bacon rolls etc.

By far the best souvenir I got was when I was the Driver Manager on the Commonwealth Heads Of Government special that ran from Edinburgh to Leuchars (golf @ St Andrews) and back in 1997. The Heads Of Government were presented with a book about the Forth Rail Bridge with a commemorative certificate in it, I managed to get hold of a copy.

Pedant mode 1:
It is painted in black at the moment as an undercoat: when it was close to the finish of its restoration 2/3 years ago this was to be the wartime black livery and numbering whilst running in took place. Sadly it needed more work; it retains this black again whilst running in. It will return in green, but BR dark green livery as 60103. This is NOT original green, it has carried Great Northen Railway green when new as an A1 class loco, through LNER apple green and rebuild to an A3, then BR dark green in the 1950s. (Also various other temporary schemes). Upon withdrawal from normal revenue earning service in 1963(?) it was bought privately by Alan Pegler. He had it restored to a single chimney, added a corridor tender like it had new, (eventually he made that 2) and it was repainted LNER green again as 4472. It gave many years service in preservation, ultimately for operating reasons regaining its double chimney and German type smoke deflectors from the late 1950s BR era. 10 years ago it was bought by the National Railway Museum at York and the present rebuild started.
Pedant mode 2:
The smoke deflectors and double chimney, along with a single non-corridor tender, represent the last years of BR service. However as it continued in service in preservation, techically the mix and match condition it is in now (or shortly will be) in ARE historically correct as it has been there before!
Good to see the old girl back in steam.
